DescriptionThe Mauli Ola Foundation, Polynesian Underground and Ambry Genetics are throwing a benefit concert to help The Mauli Ola Foundation take children with Cystic Fibrosis surfing. The Mauli Ola Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization founded in 2008 to promote awareness of genetic disease and support for patients. One of the Foundation’s programs is Surf Experience Days, which pairs professional surf instructors and novice surf students who have Cystic Fibrosis to introduce them to the healing properties of exercise, ocean air, achievement, and fun in a supportive environment. Hypertonic saline (which is prevalent in the ocean air just above the water’s surface) has been shown to be a natural treatment for people with Cystic Fibrosis.

YOUTH MEDIA INTRO
Young filmmakers never fail to surprise us * their perspectives,
burgeoning skills, and fresh take on the tried and true yield a
never-ending crop of plucky, perceptive and astounding works. This
group of seven new works, which takes us to Guam, New York, San Diego
and points in between is no exception. If fact, you might just say
that Youth Media goes world-wide at this year*s Festival, at least in
the heart and in the mind.
OUR PATH, OUR JOURNEY, OUR VOICE
(Guam, 2009) Dirs.:
A group of students at Guam's Department of Youth Affairs go
against the grain and share their experiences as at-risk youths as
they prepare to participate in a documentary film project sponsored by
DYA and L.A.-based FYI: Films by Youth Inside. Two of the students,
Andrew and Jennifer, reveal their perspectives on youth issues,
incarceration, and the expectations from family, friends and society
that compell them to illegal activities. Through their experiences
working together with fellow classmates on a narrative short project,
Andrew and Jennifer come to realize that through hard work and
self-determination, they can grow beyond their respective
circumstances and fulfill their potential.
Video, 15 min., color, documentary
ALL YOU NEED IS BIG AUNTIE
(Guam, 2009) Dirs.: Youth at Guan DYA
A young woman is confronted by a never-ending array of problems on the
day that her family is served notice of eviction * her brother,
wounded in a botched robbery attempt, is arrested; the rent money is
stolen by two slacker brothers, and she is under pressure to accept a
date with the local wannabe gangsta. It's up to the DINGA's
no-nonsense Big Auntie, and a forest spirit, or duendas, to show her
the right way to solving her problems.
Video, 18 min., color, narrative

DescriptionOn Saturday 24 July 2010 at 7PM, Kumu Mark Keali`i Ho`omalu and the Academy of Hawaiian Arts (AHA) of Oakland, California will present "Waikiki" in Los Angeles County.

"Waikiki" is a Broadway-style hula musical tracing the history of our enchantment with Waikiki from pre-western contact through the beach boy era. "Waikiki" has been performed in several top venues in Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, Fukushima) at nearly a $100 per ticket, and the show made its American premiere in Northern California in November 2009.
Waikiki has a long, colorful history. The first half of “Waikiki” recalls the natural beauty of the flowing springs, verdant groves, and rich fishing grounds as well as the battles, heroic adventures and everyday lives of the kings, queens, chiefs and commoners who made their homes there. The second half of “Waikiki” recalls the beach resort’s Golden Era (1920-1960)— the romantic atmosphere, elegant hotels, luaus, beach boys, surfing, dancing and chalangalang traditions.
Audiences recognize Kumu Ho`omalu as the voice of Hawai`i from the movie "Lilo and Stitch". The hula kahiko (ancient hula) of “Waikiki” is choreographed by Kumu Ho`omalu and driven by the rhythms of his Hawaiian gourd drum, which is the heartbeat of AHA’s hula. AHA’s hula kahiko is powerful and vibrant, tracing its roots from Lua, the martial art of Hawai`i. “Waikiki” features both new and classic Hawaiian music. The hula `auana (modern hula) of the show is accompanied by Kumu Ho`omalu on `ukelele, Kihei Nahele-a and Mark Yamanaka on guitars, Ray Bambao on upright bass, and Aldon Sanders on piano.
